Explore all that Delaware has to offer on First State Fun Day!

Spotlight Delaware is busting the myth that “Delaware is boring.” From Claymont to Delmar, the First State is packed with hidden gems: historic landmarks, beautiful natural landscapes, unexpected art exhibits, lively libraries, and more—all within a two-hour drive.

On September 26, more than 15 attractions statewide will open their doors with free admission and special programming, inviting you to experience what makes Delaware such a vibrant, unique place to live and explore.

First State Fun Day is your chance to break out of your routine and discover something new to love about Delaware—whether it’s practically in your backyard or tucked away in a town you’ve never visited.

Ready to join the fun? Register in advance on Eventbrite. Then beofre the big day, scan the QR code for your digital passport – no app required! Use your passport to check in at the places you visit. And if you check in at least once, and you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a prize!

Delaware State Libraries

Did you know every Delawarean lives within seven miles of a library?! This year marks Delaware Libraries’ 125th Anniversary — get your FREE library card today online or in-person and unlock opportunity! 

Visitors will unlock endless possibilities at their public library — to check out books, items from the “Library of Things,”  eMedia, services, and fun and educational programs.

Here are a few events happening at libraries on First State Fun Day: 

New Castle County

Delaware History Museum & Mitchell Center for African American Heritage

Get a glimpse into Delaware’s fascinating past and explore the history of the First State from multiple perspectives at the Delaware History Museum & Mitchell Center for African American Heritage. 

Delaware Sports Hall of Fame

Located inside the Blue Rocks Stadium, the museum takes you through the decades of sports in Delaware, from the first athletic competition of the Lenni Lenape up to today.

DuPont Environmental Education Center

DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC) is located along the Christina River and on the edge of the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge.

Kalmar Nyckel Foundation

Explore our maritime museum, follow an engaging audio tour, climb aboard a three-quarter-scale replica of the 1638 tall ship Kalmar Nyckel—complete with cannons—and design a miniature boat to see how much weight it can hold before it sinks!

New Castle County Courthouse Museum

The site of Delaware’s first capital and oldest court house, where Delaware separated from Pennsylvania and Great Britain. Perfect for the America 250 and Delaware 250 celebrations!

Read House & Gardens

The 14,000-square-foot Read House is renowned for its architecture, design, and historic gardens and grounds overlooking the Delaware River in Historic New Castle.


Kent County

Agricultural Museum & Village

The Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village preserves and promotes Delaware’s rich farming heritage through engaging exhibits and a historic village.

Biggs Museum

The Biggs Museum of American Art is a vibrant cultural destination in Dover, Delaware, dedicated to celebrating American creativity through its diverse collection, dynamic exhibitions, and engaging programs for all ages.

Bowers Beach Maritime Museum

The Bowers Beach Maritime Museum houses artifacts of Bowers, the Delaware Bay and the watermen of the area, and is home to the annual Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash.

First State Heritage Park

Step back in time to the 18th century in an original building and play colonial-era games with costumed interpreters!

Woodburn, The Governor’s House

Woodburn has served as the official residence of the Governor of Delaware since 1965. Today, historians credit Woodburn’s historical importance as much to the home’s architecture as to its previous notable residents.


Sussex County

Abbott’s Mill Nature Center

Abbott’s Mill Nature Center offers miles of scenic trails through forests, meadows, and along Johnson Branch. Hike through lush deciduous and Atlantic White Cedar woodlands. Discover wildlife up close in the Visitor’s Center with its live animal collection and taxidermy animal displays. 

DuPont Nature Center

Educational facility with interactive exhibits designed to connect people with the Delaware Bay’s natural history and ecology. View seabirds from the observation deck and get an up-close look at bay wildlife, including horseshoe crabs, seahorses, and flounder inside the Visitor’s Center.

Gallery 107 represents the artists of the Nanticoke River Council and provides art exhibits, and classes for children and adults.

Nanticoke Indian Museum

The Nanticoke Indian Museum, Delaware’s only Native American museum, preserves and shares the rich history, culture, and living traditions of the Nanticoke people through thousands of ancestral artifacts, traditional arts, and immersive exhibits.

Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge

Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge focuses on providing habitat and protection for migratory birds and endangered species; and the list of fun things to do here is long, including hiking, boating, fishing, birdwatching, wildlife photography, and exploring.

Rehoboth Beach Film Society

Zwaanendael Museum

The Zwaanendael Museum is a showcase for Lewes-area maritime, military, and social history. Modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, the Netherlands, the museum commemorates the founding of Delaware’s first European settlement by the Dutch in 1631.
